IFDIP-Nephron Internship Descriptions
Nephron Analytical Services and Formulation Internship
The Product Development intern will be part of the Analytical Services and Formulation departments at Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation for a 12-week internship position.
The Product Development Internship position provides an opportunity for graduate students who are currently pursuing a Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biochemistry or related physical science degree to get hands on experience working with senior scientists in a fast-paced pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
The Product Development Intern will be responsible for assisting in pre-formulation and formulation development as well as the characterization of drug products using analytical processes and other advanced laboratory techniques.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Product development for new or existing products, including potential process scale-up activities.
- Provide feedback on the design, evaluation, and development of formulations for pre-clinical studies, clinical trials, and process development
- In-depth learning and application of cGMP/cGLP requirements, such as lab safety and pharmaceutical regulations as defined by the FDA.
- Analytical method development for release of raw materials, finished goods, and stability analysis.
- Record and analyze data and compile results into applicable reports.
- Development of technical communication skills, including protocol generation and summary report generation.
- Gaining experience working in complex team environments by engaging with different departments.
- Attend key meetings to better understand team responsibilities, workflows, and timelines, while developing inter-and intra- departmental communication skills.
Nephron Clinical Lab Internship in Molecular Biology
Nephron Clinical Lab is a CLIA-certified diagnostics laboratory, established in 2020 to rapidly respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Clinical Lab performs molecular diagnostic tests for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus in upper respiratory specimens. Additionally, the Clinical Lab performs immunohematology tests for presence of IgG and IgM antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in serum.
The summer research project will focus on molecular diagnostic techniques such as viral RNA extraction and RT-PCR. Various methods of RT-PCR will be performed on RNA extracted from specimen types such as nasal swabs and saliva. Additionally, differences between conventional singleplex, dualplex, and multiplex RT-PCR will be explored.
Nephron Engineering Internship
Nephron Pharmaceuticals is extending an internship in the Engineering Department within the Smart Manufacturing team to support data analytics towards process optimization on a Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) manufacturing cell. BFS is an advanced, aseptic liquid packaging technology, whereby product containers are formed, filled and sealed in a matter of seconds through a continuous and automated process. Data acquired from information systems needs to be interpreted to support predictive analytics within the lifecycles of Nephron products. BFS cells are housed in cleanrooms and are used to form, fill and seal Nephron core products. The intern will be part of the team constructing data-driven models to handle different statistical complications and creating specific interfaces that integrates within the Nephron Digital Twin framework. The framework integrates process data from several manufacturing cells and communicates through model indices to enable process optimization. Intern will preferably know the basics of programming skills for data analytics and/or application development, and will be taught through the program the manufacturing process and the founding bricks for successful smart manufacturing applications within the Nephron engineering team.
